Wonderland Trail, Day #2. Woke up bright and early this morning. Probably because we went to bed at 7pm. We packed up and hit the trail by 8am. Back over the Carbon River via the suspension bridge and started climbing immediately. Then we climbed some more. Went past Dick Creek Camp and then hiked along the side of the Carbon Glacier - still up! However, we came out onto the most glorious meadow. Spectacular views of Mt. Rainier and wildflowers galore. A bit a respite from the climbing through the meadow. We arrived at Mystic Lake around lunch time. The lake was gorgeous but the mosquitos were horrible! After a quick stop we started climbing once more and hiked around the side and bottom of the Winthrop Glacier. Such a moonscape! We were so close to the glacier. Garda falls was in the distance and is quite stunning. After we came around the bottom of the glacier we began to climb once again. This was a calf burning sort of day! We saw a pika and a bunch of marmots. We saw bear poop on the trail but no bear. We climbed up next to the other side of the Winthrop Glacier and then into a nice alpine forest. Some more climbing and we arrived at Granite Creek Camp. There was one site occupied (site #1 probably the nicest site - at least the site with the best view) and we settled into site #2. The only other site at Granite Creek is the group site. The camp has a nice little stream nearby with a log footbridge. Dinner was Mountain Home spaghetti. Yummy! Today was fairly grueling. Still getting my hiking legs and there was A LOT of up! Miles hiked = 7.9. Total miles hiked = 16.6
